The folks over in Sandersville put on a great ride in their first ever Kaolin Festival Century. 101 riders showed up on a beautiful sunny day to ride in the scenic countryside of Washington County. Nice roads, just the right amount of hills and great support at the start/stop and the rest stops made for a good day of riding.
Milledgeville showed great support for the event with a good number of riders participating. Adam, Liz, Doug, Sha'ron and his son, Jason, Angie, Bo, Wes, Will, Rob and I were there. There was a young man and his mother who said they were from Milledgeville. That's 14 that I know of. John David, Cole and Teresa from Eatonton were there as were Ed from Sandersville and David from Atlanta. I recognized a few riders from Augusta.
I rode with Adam early on, then with Ed and David much of the way to the first rest stop, rode solo to the second stop and rode the rest of the ride in a group with Rob, John David, Cole and Teresa. I felt great all the way, not suffering much on the hills and finished the 62 miles in a little over 4 hours. My Salsa Casseroll was a smooth and comfortable ride as always.
Jason and Bo were the first riders to finish the 108 mile route (surprise ;)) at about 5 hours and 40 minutes. Angie and Wes were not far behind.
The after ride meal was good and welcome and the ride staff made sure everyone had a good experience. That was a heck of good job on a first time event. I hope they will continue to hold this ride. I plan to come back if they do.
