Forget parking, bike to class
ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) Emory University is hoping to make bikes the must-have back-to-school accessory this fall.
The school is selling discounted bicycles to students and faculty, adding bike lanes to campus roads and stocking bikes that can be borrowed for free.
The university is pushing its $250,000 "Bike Emory" initiative, launched a year ago, in hopes of convincing students and faculty that the eco-friendly bikes are a better alternative to their four-wheeled, gas-guzzling counterparts.

I don't know that the administration will buy in, or has the cash to with the condition that current state budget is in (asking for 5 - 10% cuts from all organizations and institutions). Still totally worth looking into, and therefore have forwarded it on to the power that is that might be interested:)
Did you see the article about the school up north? I think it was Ripon college, maybe in Michigan or Wisconsin or something...they're giving a bike to every freshman who agrees not to bring a car!

Even given the budget cuts, I think we should get this info to Dave. Think of all the extra revenue something like that would be for OO!!!

I see it as a good area of common interest for the school and the city to work together toward a solution to the downtown parking problem. Both should support creating a safe passage across the 441 bypass which leads to a system of bicycle-friendly streets connecting the dorms, parking lots, classrooms, downtown shopping and recreation areas.
I had an administrator here at GCSU forward a copy of the Emory article to me. I'm all for the idea, even though OO is not permitted to do business with the college due to conflict of interest laws. It is really encouraging to see the significant increase in bicycle numbers on and around campus the past 2 - 3 years. Parking issues + higher fuel prices = more students riding. I like it! If we can keep pressing for M'ville to become a bit more bicycle friendly that trend should continue.

Looking at my bill for the upcoming school year, I see a "Transportation fee", as well as a "Transportation ENHANCEMENT Fee".....$10.
I think GCSU's idea of enhancement is being able to pay for rising gas prices for the shuttles.
My idea of enhancements is....well....bikes...or at least paying for bike racks for the front of the shuttle.
Oh well...*rolleyes*
We need more bike racks around school too. Im afraid of not having anywhere to park when I ride to class this semester.

Jordan, if you had put the word "rolleyes" between :: instead of between **, this is what you would have.
