I was out at the Selma Trail today, walking through a new wooded section with no trails currently in place. An old logging road provided a path to walk. It might be nice to open a new section of trail at Selma Irwin.
What are the plans for the Trail Care Crew visit next month at Bartram Forest? Will any work be done at Selma Irwin?

I believe that with the impending "closure" of Bartram as we know it, the IMBA work day(s) will be primarily focused on improving and extending trails at Selma. Maybe someone a little more involved can follow up with the specifics, but this is my impression:)

Eric says: "Bartram's educational component is closing but the forest itself will remain open for public access. ":)

Yes, I think that is why "closure" was in quotes in Liz's message.
Bartram will be accessible, but serious questions remain about maintenance and enforcement of restrictions (horses, motorcycles, 4-wheelers etc.). I understand that there are ongoing discussions between many individuals and organizations interested in partnering to keep Bartram available as a public resource.
I believe it will be worked out, but for now, it makes more sense to concentrate the immediate trail building activity on the Selma Irwin Trails. That is not a bad thing as there is a lot of potential to create more trails for a wider range of skill levels and to make the trails more easily accessible.

The International Mountain Bicycling Association is coming to Georgia. Chris and Leslie of the Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew will be in Milledgeville for a Trail Building School. The Crews teach sustainable trail building, which means building trails that last a long time and require minimal maintenance. This helps reduce trail damage, protects the environment and enhances visitor enjoyment. Join the crew for a social event, day of trail building and fun ride!

Two questions:
1. What is "Club Care Workshop"?
2. Does the Blackbird have carrot cake?:)

The Club Care Workshop is aimed at helping local bicycling clubs attract more members, retain those members, and get those members more actively involved in the projects the club takes on.
I'll have to check on the carrot cake...

Everybody get on over to the IMBA website and register for the Trail Care Crew workshop! This will help us plan for things like lunches, tools, etc. The link's been posted a couple of times, but here it is again:

IMBA presented some good ideas for building the club; making the club stronger and growing its membership. I didn't take minutes at the meeting, but only wrote down a few ideas that peak my interest.
The group discussed the success of the club's April Fools Day ride event. This event is one of the club's strengths, but also its biggest task. IMBA suggested assigning tasks to small groups, instead of placing the burden on one person. A small committee could share the responsibilities of the assigned task.
The club should have a "secretary" at the meetings; someone to take notes on what was discussed. These notes can be shared with other members and used on the website as well. Many of the club's accomplishments may go unnoticed if they are only discussed at the meeting and not published on the website, newsletter, or other format.
The club should develop a wishlist. This could be a list of items needed by the club such as a trailer to haul bikes. It could also be skills such as secretarial skills to take meeting minutes. The wishlist should be widely published to encourage people who might have the items or skills that the club needs to volunteer with the club.
It was suggested that the club could volunteer outside of the cycling community to promote the club to the public. Subaru sponsors running events well as cycling. The bicycle club could help out at a running event. This would promote BCM as an active member of the community, and promote cycling to a new group.
The Bicycling Club of Milledgeville has accomplished many good things. Some of these good deeds have been published in the local paper. The club should be able to grow its membership by publishing its activities to the website, the facebook page, or other media outlets.
Great meeting. Lots of ideas.
