We actually have some forum members who live around Savannah.
Lori? Charlie? You guys want to do that ride to get yourselves closer to your November ride goals?
Hey Racheal, I guess you really did enjoy the half-century ;)
Wish I could ride it with you but I will be sure to keep training on the left coast so you dont pass me up anymore...

The Savannah Century is a good first century if you don't have your climbing legs, because it's a dead flat course. The start in the historic town is beautiful.
The ride over the bridge is wonderful for the scenic view of downtown and the boats going out to sea. There is a police escort for the bridge crossing, so you can't stop to take pictures.
After that the miles roll by and there is little to occupy your mind. I found it a rather dull ride, but I did get my 100 miles in. The rest stops were good, especially the last one before completing the ride.
Riding along the coast, you will have to watch the wind and draft with the bunch. The peleton will start off at walking pace and slowly build speed until they drop the lesser riders. Find a group you work with, and stay together. You'll be able to rack up the miles without working too hard.
Rachael,
If you do decide to do this ride what distance do you think you will do? I would consider doing the ride if we don't go camping that weekend.

My sister and I are going to ride the 37 mile option. I will ride around in circles a few times to get my 40 miles! I know I am cheating by going somewhere that it is flat but I will have to climb the Talmadge. BTW, I completely underestimated the spin class at Fitness Plus. My thighs are just now not burning anymore!!!

You'll enjoy the ride over the Talmadge bridge. It seems like more of a climb than it really is because everything else is so flat. Just pick a gear low enough that you can comfortably spin your way to the top, but not so low that you bounce. The view from the top and the ride down the other side are more than worth the climb.
Maybe you could back track a couple of miles at a nice section along the course to get in your extra miles. That's a lot easier to handle than riding the extra miles after the end.

or you could just ride in circles around your riding mates like Adam tends to do (HAHA!)

I thought Adam got all his extra miles in after missing turns.

It is true though, my screen name has absolutely nothing to do with my speed, but rather my penchant for getting lost on group rides...Oh yeah, and I ride an Allez. What can I say, I'm a clever guy;)
