That would be a good solution for someone with a MTB or hybrid that they don't ride because the handlebars are too low.

That's for a 1-1/8" threadless steerer, right?

Yes, that is correct. 1 1/8 inch
Sheldon Brown says it's standard for mountain bikes. This is the standard bar and stem on the Burley Zydeco tandem, which is a mountain-style tandem with a mixte frame.
The old quill stems looked more aerodynamic and elegant, but we must make progress and be modern.

...but we must make progress and be modern.

Says who? ;) Those are not always the same thing.

But we must buy parts that will be compatible with the bikes we are upgrading.

1 1/8 inch threadless is compatible with probably 99% of all mountain bikes or hybrids made since the early to mid 90's and most road bikes since not long after that.

But if you had a bike with a fork with a threaded steerer (like my '92 Trek or some very low end bikes even today) it would not work without changing the fork. You could make it work on a 1" threadless steerer by adding a shim. It wouldn't work on Liz's Cannondale with its freakish 1 1/4" steerer.

But it would work on an awful lot of bikes.
