View Full Version : Very limited outdoor riding for me

Based on the way I suffered in the heat yesterday and the advice of my doctors, I will have to abstain from most of the planned rides for some time to come. :(

The problem is mostly with my skin's sensitivity to sunlight caused by my chemo drugs. Afternoon rides are out. I might be able to sneak in an early morning ride here and there if I can ride before the sun comes out. Sunday's ride didn't cause a bad skin reaction, but even with the copious amounts of sunscreen I wore, my face and arms got a little red. They tell me the reaction to a real sunburn can be pretty nasty. Better to play it safe than sorry, so I'll not be hanging with the Mad Dogs and Englishmen for a while. ;)

If it is cloudy on the 26th, I'll try to make it to the Greenway ride. I'll be the one in the longsleeve shirt and a Booney hat over my helmet. (Columbia, of course). :D

Meanwhile, I'll be working on improving the indoor training setup.

bummer.
What kind of trainer do you have now?
Maybe this is an opportunity to get a Netathlon machine.

Hmm. This stuff? http://www.fitcentric.com/html/netathlon_1_0.htm

Looks kind geeky to a retro grouch like me. Remember, you're talking to a guy who converted his favorite road bike from indexed shifters to friction.

I'm interested in hardware, not software. My TV, stereo, DVR and DVD player will provide all the electronic entertainment I'll want.

I now have a very good Kurt Kinetic Road Machine trainer. Once I put upright handlebars on Kemo Sabe, I can ride that setup. But down the road I think a chair-like position is going to be more appropriate.

Besides, in a weak moment last night, Lori conceded that a recumbent trainer would fit in our living room for a while. Gotta strike while the iron is hot. :D

That's the one. Great fun for riding indoors. You get virtual scenery, online riding partners, and the resistance varies with the terrain in the scenery. A hill in the program feels like a hill to your legs.
I agree, it is geeky, but it eliminates the boredom of riding inside the house. Surely it would be compatible with the old friction shifters.

The recumbent bike would probably fit on your trainer, then you could ride it without getting any weird looks from the neighbors.
