Location: Blackbird Coffee

Members present: Adam, Liz , Heather, Justin (new member), Joe and Julia M, Earl (new member) and Benny
Adam called the meeting to order at 6:00.

News:

Welcome to new members Justin and Earl who attended the cub meeting. Justin is a student at GMC who has been riding with us for a few weeks on the weekly road and offroad rides. Earl is a friend and coworker of Renee, who told him about the club. Earl signed onto the forums as “etishome”. He is planning to ride BRAG this June and is looking to do a lot of riding between now and then.

May is Bike Month. The club will be hosting several activities this month to help call attention to cycling.

May 15 is Bike to work day. A bike train will leave from behind Oconee Outfitters to escort riders who want to ride their bikes to work from there. Train leaves at 7:15, passing by the rider’s work locations.

Adam will write letters to the editors of local newspapers to make public aware of bike safety, fun and benefits.

The Ride of Silence will start at 7:00pm Wednesday, May 20 behind Oconee Outfitters. This will be a short, slow and silent bike ride in honor of bicyclists who have been injured or killed in collisions with automobiles. Helmets required.

The BATTY Ride (Bikes Are Traffic Too, Y’all) will start at 5:30pm behind Oconee Outfitters on May 27th. This is a short, fun ride to demonstrate that bicycles belong on the streets of Milledgeville. Strict adherence to the laws and rules of safe bicycling will be stressed. The monthly club meeting will follow after the ride at Blackbird Coffee.

Upcoming Area Rides:

First Saturday Cycle Tour - Warrenton, GA, May 2, 8am - 1st Saturday Cycle Tour and fun ride - Warrenton's annual cycle tour with a variety of routes. Earl, Michael and Benny plan to ride this one.

The Challenge of the Centuries – Hartwell, GA, May 23 and 24 – Two days of well supported rides with options from 30 up to 100 miles each day. Rolling to hilly terrain. A great training ride for BRAG. Benny will be there.

Bicycle Ride Across Georgia (BRAG) – Hiawassee to Clarks Hill Lake, June 6-13. Join 1600+ riders for a week of riding through beautiful parts of Georgia. Great routes of about 60 miles each day. Camping at school campuses (motels optional) each night. An experience of a lifetime. Earl, Sha’Ron and Benny plan to ride.

See Forum and Calendar for more info on these and more upcoming rides.

Club Rides:

Weekly Road Rides - Tuesdays, 5:30pm, Oconee Outfitters

Weekly Offroad Rides - Thursdays, 5:30pm, Bartram Forest Trails

Business:

Bartram Forest is showing serious signs of neglect since the state funding for the Forestry Commission position of overseer was eliminated. We have and will continue to contact Forestry Commission and legislative officials in hopes of getting some trail maintenance authorized. Watch the forums for future work dates and letter writing campaigns to help improve the situation.

Next Meeting: May 27, 6:00pm, Blackbird Coffee

Adjournment: The meeting adjourned at 7:00 pm
