At approximately 5:30 pm, Benny called the meeting to order.

Review of last month’s activities:
Greenway Ride -13 riders. Everyone is encouraged to bring someone new to this month’s Greenway Ride which will be Saturday, July 26th at 9:00 am.

Work and Race at Rock Hawk went well. An extra special thank you goes to John for his three days of volunteerism! We will be available next year and we hope to be asked to get involved a little earlier.

Sherriff’s Camp also went well. Hopefully, inspired a few and encouraged all to exhibit proper bicycle safety and etiquette. At our presentation we had a total of 5 “instructors” from BCM, 125 students, 14 teachers, and 12 law officials. We had six classes at a length of thirty minutes each.
Our introduction to the students usually consisted of asking who had a bike, and we used that to bring us into discussion about who has and who wears helmets, and the reasons why we do. Along with helmets, we discussed the clothing and fit of all apparel while riding.
Discussions also involved the sizing and fit of your helmet and bikes. Also discussed during this part usually was the other bike parts (saddle, brakes, chain, tires, lights, and other accessories)
and their importance.
Discussed also was the topic of riding safely on the street, though this was usually done with the older kids. Hand signals, riding etiquette, lane choosing and changing. This was usually done with relevance to the age group at the time. Places to ride included the sidewalk (for the very young), inside your yard, on the street, and the new Greenway. We made some aware of our monthly outing at the greenway. Thank you John M. for this report.
For next year’s camp: work with Pilot Club to hand out helmets to those children that do not have them and investigate Bike Town as well Dream Team for potential funding opportunities.

Upcoming rides : See new forum -http://www.mvillebikes.com/vbulletin/index.php
Greenway Ride -Saturday, July 26th at 9:00 am.

Working events :
July 19th, open house at Vought
BCM can have a booth 9am to 1pm, volunteers are needed. Please contact Benny by the 18th if you can help. Also, if you have any literature you want to include, get it to him by the 18th. This is a great forum to promote bicycling in Milledgeville and to reach people that have not yet gotten on their bicycles. Suggested materials: BCM cards, brochures for Selma Irwin and Bartram brochures for the greenway, brochures for BCM, GDOT guides, and rental info from OO.

Help mail T-shirts: Thank you Liz, Heather, and Diane for volunteering

Thank you notes still need to be sent to our April Fools Sponsors

Our president would like us to spend the money we raised during the 2007 and 2008 April Fools Rides. Budget was approved in April. On the agenda this month is to move forward with the “share the road” signs, the website, and the bicycle rack for the greenway.

New Business:
Start a Milestone Ride Program: see our website at http://www.mvillebikes.com/
A program to help people prepare for a goal of riding a milestone ride next Fall. The main target event will be the Claxton Cruisin' In The Country Century in November. Some will have the goal of riding 100 miles at that ride. Others may choose a shorter distance. Others may choose a different goal. We at BCM will do our best to work with anyone who wants our help to prepare for a big ride.

BATTY: Bikes are Traffic Too, Ya’ll
Latest brainchild of our esteemed president: A monthly awareness event to include themes, costumes, contests, and a 20 minute ride through downtown. Members are requested to think of potential themes and costumes, restaurant sponsors, and how to recruit as many riders as possible.

Tentative date for the first ride: September 5, 2008

Next meeting scheduled for July 30th at 5:30 pm, 211 Lanier Hall

Adjourned ~ 7:00 pm. Drinks and great conversation followed at The Buff.
