I was recently contacted by Mike King from Z97.7 in Eatonton. They are hosting a Family Safety Fair at the Milledgeville Mall on Nov. 8th from noon to 5pm. Mike was interested in getting the club involved. We would need to man a booth for the duration of the event, as well as have some form of bicycle safety presentation in order. We already have a lot of hand outs to distribute, and this seems like a good way to meet some new people and maybe recruit some more members. We will however need some volunteers. I am tentatively planning on going to the ride in Claxton, but if we can't get enough other volunteers I'll stay here for this event (yes, I am trying to guilt-trip you into volunteering!).

I can be there for the duration if need be. I would like to have at least 2 or 3 other people to help me with this. We can discuss the final plans at next week's club meeting.
Adam, you go ride your century. We can handle this. Please email me Mike's contact info.

Don't everyone volunteer at once. ;)

The Family Safety Fair went well. I wasn't exactly swamped all day, but I talked to several people with bikes (or kids who ride bikes) and a couple more who were interested in getting started in cycling. It was hard to compete with Georgia Power, who brought out a miniature power station with power lines that arced and sparked and showed kids what would happen if they played with a down power line! I was also afforded the opportunity to discuss some of our other potential events ('09 AFR, bicycle rodeo, etc.) with some folks who might be able to help us out. Mike King from Z97 was very receptive, and we might look to get them involved in the AFR as a sponsor. Lt. Gray from MPD's Community Oriented Policing program was also interested in working with us in the future. They have a summer camp that sounds very similar to the Jr. Deputy program put on by the Sheriff's office, and she would like us to come do some presentation there this summer. I also spoke with her about our desire to eventually host a bicycle rodeo, and it sounds like we could get some much needed manpower from MPD for such an event. She also asked for my help (and anyone else who might be interested) assembling bikes to be given away for Christmas. Stay tuned for more details about that. Overall, I'd say the event was a success and I hope we can do it again in the future. Maybe with more club members there...
